Why public nodes matter
Public Ergo nodes form the backbone of the network. In case of network disruptions, such as government shutdowns, regional outages, ISP blocks, or DDoS attacks, a distributed set of reachable public nodes is essential to ensure resilience. A healthy network relies on geographic and infrastructural diversity. Concentrating public nodes within a single cloud provider or region creates single points of failure. By running a public node on independent infrastructure, you directly contribute to the Ergo network and boost the network resilience and fault tolerance.
Peer discovery
Ergo nodes discover each other through peer advertisements. Setting your node's declaredAddress allows other nodes to find and connect to your node.
Every new reachable public node expands the network's connectivity map. The more reachable public nodes are present, the more resilient and well-connected the overall network becomes.
How to host a public node
1. Run an Ergo node. Follow the official guide at docs.ergoplatform.com to install and synchronize a full node on Linux, Windows, or Mac via Docker or other releases.
2. Configure the IP address. Set your public IP address and port in the configuration under declaredAddress. Ensure a static IP address is used here.
3. Ensure Accessibility. Forward the TCP port through your router or firewall. If your node is operating behind a dynamic IP address, set up a reverse proxy under the set static IP address and forward the traffic.
Reachability Check
This website periodically collects peer advertisements and verifies node reachability. If your node advertises a declaredAddress , it will appear on the map and in the directory.
New nodes are usually discovered within an hour. Use this website to verify your configuration.
